The fact you can go anywhere in the virtual world adds an eerie gothic feeling to the game, and there’s nothing like discovering that your lonely hiding place is in fact shared by a dog eating a corpse. Like Half-Life, Stalker takes the shape of one giant level with various load points, but there are no linear game paths here. The most obvious genre companion to Stalker is the original Half-Life, but Stalker is far more ambitious in scope. During the game, you’ll make allegiances with other scavengers, taking on odd jobs and missions and building up a picture of what happened to you. You’ve got amnesia and, not surprising given the circumstances, an itchy trigger finger. The idea is simple – you’ve woken up in the zone contaminated by the explosion in Chernobyl in 1986.
